To respond strategically to the safety and environmental regulations developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), JSTRA conducts research related to the development of regulations. JSTRA also conducts investigations to comprehensively grasp the trends of IMO’s regulations, the trends of important related standards developed by other international organizations, such as the ISO and IEC, and changes in the circumstances surrounding the maritime field.
IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for maritime affairs. Its main purpose is to formulate international rules (international conventions, etc.) on safety and environmental issues relating to shipping and ships. International conventions formulated by the IMO include the SOLAS Convention (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea) and the MARPOL Convention (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships).
